Virgilio Mattoli (Team Leader)

Biography

fototessera_virgilioVirgilio Mattoli received his Laurea degree in chemistry (with honours) from the University of Pisa and the Diploma in Chemistry (with honours) from the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa in 2000. He joined the CRIM Lab of Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in 2001 with a research program focused on the control and integration of miniaturised devices for environmental and biomedical application. He received his PhD in bio-engineering (with honours) from Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in 2005 after a visiting research period at the University of Stanford (2004), Center for Design Research, where he focused his activity on sensors and controls modules for biomimetic robotics applications. In 2005 and 2008 he was visiting researcher at Waseda University (Tokyo, Japan) working on a bio-inspired mini-robot and nanosheet development. From June 2008 to October 2009 he obtained a temporary position of Assistant Professor of bioengineer engineering at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (SSSA). Since November 2009, he has been a Team Leader of the Smart Materials Platform in the Center for Micro-BioRobotics IIT@SSSA. He is also founder of a spin-off company of Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (www.forsense-tech.com) active in the field of the monitoring technologies.

His main research interests include: bio-inspired/smart materials, biorobotics, thin film sensor microfabrication, sensor conditioning, miniaturised acquisition system, wireless sensor networks and mechatronics. He is currently involved in several research projects on these topics. He is author or co-author of ten articles on refereed international journals, of more than thirty papers published in international conferences proceedings and of three patents.
