from November 2009 is Team Leader of the Microrobotics Area at the Center for Micro-BioRobotics@SSSA of Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Pontedera (Pisa), Italy. She graduated in Electronic Engineering from the University of Pisa in 1998 and received the Ph.D. in Microsystem Engineering from the University of Rome Tor Vergata in 2003. In 1999 she joined the Center of Research in Microengineering (CRIM) Laboratory of Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (SSSA) as research assistant and has collaborated to European scientific projects in the field of biomedical microsystems. She joined the Advanced Robotic Technology and System (ARTS) of SSSA in 2005 and obtained a temporary position of Assistant Professor in Bioengineering in 2008. She has matured expertise in biomechatronics and microsystem engineering in the biomedical field, for example she addressed investigations related to biomedical microsystems for in-vivo applications, MEMS, bioinspired solutions for bionic hand tactile feedback systems and human-like tactile encoding. Dr. Beccai collaborated to many international projects being responsible for research management activities in several of them, like in Cyberhand (EU-IST-FET-2001-35094) and Nanobiotact (FP6-NMP-033287). She is member of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society and the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society. Her current scientific interests at the Center, where she co-tutors 9 PhD students, are related to the investigation of innovative sensing, actuation and locomotion strategies in robotics using inspiration from Nature, focus is on soft bodied microrobots, biomimetic tactile sensors and bio-hybrid sensing systems at the microscale.
