Biography
Barbara Mazzolai is currently the Coordinator of the Center for Micro-BioRobotics (IIT@SSSA) of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) of Genoa, Italy. She graduated in Biology (with Honours) at the University of Pisa, Italy, in 1995. From 1994 to 1998, she worked at the Institute of Biophysics of the National Research Council on environmental topics. In 1998, she received her Master’s degree in Eco-management at Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (SSSA), Pisa. She had a research assistant position at CRIM Lab of SSSA from 1999 to 2004, where she was the founder of a research area on “Microtechnologies and robotics for environmental and agrofood applications”. From July 2004 to October 2009, she had a position of Assistant Professor in Biomedical Engineering at SSSA. She was co-founder of the Research Centre on Sea Technologies and Marine Robotics of the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Livorno. From November 1, 2009 to February 15, 2011, she was Team Leader at the IIT@SSSA Center. Her research interests are in the field of biorobotics and microbiorobotics. Starting from microsystems research for environmental studies, she has been investigated bioinspired solutions for service robotics. She is currently working on biomimetic robotics, investigating animal and vegetal systems from an engineering point of view and with engineering tools, and designing robotic artefacts that can help scientists to better understand the biological working principles and mechanisms. She is project manager of many European projects in the field of biorobotics and service robotics. She is author of more than 90 appeared in international journals, books, and conference proceedings. She is Guest Co-Editor of a Special Issue of two Special Issues of Applied Bionics and Biomechanics on "Biologically inspired robots and mechanisms". She has been member of panels of the European Commission within the Seventh Frame Program in the field of Robotics and ICT, and of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology in the field of Environment and Health. She contributed to the organisation of the 1st IEEE RAS/EMBS Conference on Biomedical Robotics and Biomechatronics (BioRob 2006), and served as Regional Chair (Europe) of the 1st International Conference on Applied Bionics and Biomechanics (ICABB-2010). She is member of the IEEE, of the Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, and of the Robotics & Automation Society.
