Researcher position in smart nanomaterials for biomedical applications

The Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia with headquarters in Genova (Italy), is a non-profit institution with the primary goal of creating and disseminating scientific knowledge and strengthening Italy's technological competitiveness. A Researcher position is available at the Center for MicroBioRobotics@SSSA of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT), part of the IIT-Network of centers in Italy. Directed by Dr. Barbara Mazzolai, the Center aims at developing innovative methodologies and robotic technologies, new materials, and advanced components, both for the design and construction of high performance bio-inspired machines and systems at the micro- nanoscale, and for the development of devices for biomedical, environmental, and rescue applications. The mission of the Center is to generate and promote new scientific and technological knowledge in the microbiorobotics field, which is fully deployed by inventions deriving from an interdisciplinary approach to the tackled scientific problems. Scientific activities are carried out within the MicroRobotics and the Smart Materials Platforms.

The selected candidate will work on the study and design of smart nanomaterials for biomedical applications, that range from nanotools for cell stimulation to innovative platforms for regenerative medicine and biohybrid systems. He/she will work in a micro-bioengineering environment coordinating engineers/physicians/biologists for the development of new nanovectors, nanotransducers and nanostructured materials for biological applications. In particular, these new devices will find applications as smart biological nanostimulators, innovative vectors for drug delivery, and physically active substrates to control cell/tissue functions. Particular attention will be dedicated to the physical (magnetic, optical, piezoelectric, etc.) properties of nanomaterials.

Eligible candidates are researchers with specific expertise in the above-mentioned research lines, with a Ph.D. in Bioengineering or in a related area and at least 3 years of post-doc experience at the time of application. Essential requirements are a strong interdisciplinary background and an outstanding publication record. Moreover, the ideal candidate will have expertise in the following fields:

  • inorganic nanomaterials preparation and characterization;
  • study of bio/non-bio interactions;
  • in vitro nanomaterial testing;
  • design of biohybrid systems.

Previous experiences in drug delivery, cell culture techniques, and nanotoxicology are also beneficial.

We are looking for outstanding candidates that have carried out particularly innovative researches in their fields, and we value free academic spirit, novel ideas at the edge of science and technology, teamwork and cooperation over various disciplines. Proficiency in writing/spoken English is mandatory.

The position is available from June 2013 for 5 years. Salary and benefits are highly competitive for international standards. The candidate will join a young and enthusiastic team and will co-tutor several Ph.D. students and Post-Docs working in the above mentioned research areas. The Laboratory offers access to state-of-the-art utilities ranging from micro- nanomachining and electron microscopy techniques to advanced biological facilities.
