Postdoctoral position in Polymer Ultrathin Conformable and Stretchable Large Area Epicortical Electrode Array

The Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia – IIT - was founded with the objective of promoting the country's technological development and further education in science and technology. The research areas cover scientific topics of high innovative content, which represent the most advanced frontiers of modern technology, with wide application possibilities in various fields ranging from medicine to industry, from computer science to robotics, life sciences, and nanobiotechnology.

We invite applications for one postdoctoral position (duration 2 years) focusing on the development and application of new generation of conformable and stretchable large area epicortical electrode array.

The use of electrodes to record brain potentials directly from the surface of the cerebral cortex, known as electrocorticography (ECoG), has emerged in recent years as a promising tool for obtaining recordings with high spatial and temporal resolution. Anyhow, to date, our comprehension of the relationship between epicortical signals and the underlying neuronal activity is still lacking and would greatly benefit from the development of new investigation tools, capable of delivering a tight mechanical and electrical coupling of high density electrodes over large areas of the cortex, following convolutions and sulci of the brain.

While a number of approaches have been attempted to this end, they all have drawbacks either related to the metallic nature of the electrodes, to the lack of stretchability or to the thickness of the assembly. Recently, thanks to research conducted within the Robotics, Brain and Cognitive Sciences of IIT in collaboration with Udine Hospital, it has been demonstrated that high-density planar microEcoG electrodes allow the extraction of meaningful information at an unprecedent spatial resolution, paving the way to direct signal decoding from the premotor cortex.

The research will start from recent technical developments achieved at the Center for Micro-BioRobotics of IIT@SSSA (CMBR@SSSA), including the development of novel methods for the obtaining of ultra-thin, large area and highly conformable free-standing nanosheets made of conductive polymers, and related surface conductivity patterning. These new key technologies will allow the development of a new class of conformable/stretchable large area epicortical electrode arrays.

The research will be carried out in collaboration between the CMBR IIT@SSSA, located in Pontedera(PI) and the RBCS Dept. located in Genoa.

The selected Post-Doc candidate will work on the study, development and characterization of new conformable/stretchable large area epicortical electrode arrays. He/she will work carrying out the project in a multidisciplinary context, in close collaboration with engineers, chemists, material scientists and neuroscientists. The work will include the following research activities/topics: conformable/stretchable substrates, patterning of conductive polymers, functionalization of conducting polymers, characterization and testing of the realized devices.

The ideal candidate is a Ph.D. with expertise in one or more of the following: materials science (with focus on polymeric materials), biomedical engineering (with focus on biomaterials), and/or macromolecular chemistry. Previous experiences on bioelectronics devices and/or electrochemistry are also beneficial. Proficiency in written/spoken English is mandatory.
