Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT, www.iit.it) with its headquarters in Genova, Italy, is a non-profit institution with the primary goal of creating and disseminating scientific knowledge and strengthening Italy's technological competitiveness. IIT promotes excellence in basic and applied research through a multidisciplinary scientific program that includes humanoid technologies and robotics, neuroscience and cognition, nanotechnology and materials. The institute has a staff of more than 1200 people and 10 subsidiary research Centers throughout Italy (IIT-Network).
The Center for Micro-BioRobotics (CMBR), an IIT-Network Center based in Pontedera, Pisa, is opening one Postdoctoral position in the areas of design, modeling and fabrication of bioinspired soft tactile sensing and self-powered sensing.
The major objective is to investigate new soft tactile sensing solutions merging soft materials with function (sensing and energy) fully adopting a soft robotics approach. The final aim is to achieve self-powered sensing, which implies that several energy harvesting strategies are explored (e.g. electrostatic, triboelectric, piezoelectric, etc.). In this research activity bioinspiration from plants (which is widely addressed at the Center) will be used as a design guideline in terms of material, structure or function.
We are looking for a scientist/engineer with experience in the following areas:
- Energy harvesting at the microscale (mainly through electrostatic, triboelectric, piezoelectric approaches) and self-powered sensing;
- Soft and smart materials;
- Micro/nanodevices modeling, fabrication and characterization (including practical competences on FIB, SEM, photo- and soft-lithography, thin film deposition, multiphysics modeling tools).
The successful candidate is creative and motivated and has excellent analytical and organizational skills. He/she will be expected to: publish scholarly papers and attend international conferences; proactively perform research in a team of senior researchers, post-docs and PhD students; cooperate in various disciplines (e.g. engineering, biology, and material science); be able to set-up, follow, monitor and be responsible for his/her own personal research plans and directions. PhD and Master’s Degree student supervision is also expected. Proficiency in written/spoken English is mandatory.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications, seniority and experience.
Interested applicants should email their CV with publications and names of at least two referees, plus a brief (about 2 pages) statement regarding their educational background, research experience, and future objectives, within December 31, 2014 to:
In order to comply with Italian law (art. 23 of Privacy Law of the Italian Legislative Decree n. 196/03), the candidate is kindly asked to give his/her consent to allow IIT to process his/her personal data.
