Senior Technician in Polymer Fabrication and Chemical Laboratory

The Center for Micro-BioRobotics of IIT (CMBR@SSSA), located in Pontedera, is seeking to appoint a well-motivated full-time Senior Technician in Polymer Fabrication and Chemical Laboratory and related technologies for nanomaterial characterization.

Position overview and job duties:

  • Oversee, operate and maintain Polymer Fabrication and Chemical Laboratories with the related technologies for nanomaterial characterization at CMBR@SSSA, such us: Differential Scanning Calorimetry, (FT-IR-ATR, UV/Vis, Fluorescence and NMR) Spectroscopy, Rehometry and Particle Analysis.
  • Manage Polymer Fabrication and Chemical Laboratory day-to-day operation.

Postdoc - Biologically inspired engineering

The Center for MicroBioRobotics of IIT (CMBR@SSSA), is part of the IIT-Network of centers in Italy. Directed by Dr. Barbara Mazzolai, the Center aims at designing and developing new robotic solutions and advanced components taking inspiration from nature. Starting from the study and observation of the anatomy, physiology, structures, and behavioural features of biological models, technological innovation can be pursued and reached as a final result. Among many, some fields which benefit from this approach are sensing, actuation, materials, and robotics. The principal biological models investigated at the Center are plants and soft-bodied animals. The research aim is twofold. The first set of goals is to select the biological system(s) responsible for producing desired characteristics relevant in robotics, to identify and extract the key principles underlying these biological functions and to translate them into technological solutions. The second goal is to increase the knowledge of the biological system that we use as models.

The CMBR@SSSA is activating a procedure for the selection of n. 1 Post-doc to work in the framework of the PLANTOID European project (FET OPEN Program, Contract number:29343). The candidate will have a key research role on mechanical design for biologically inspired engineering within the soft robotics research area. The major objective of this research project is to investigate new design principles and technologies for developing robotic solutions, broadly based on the morphology of a plant root system, with similar performances, in terms of adaptive growth and elongation capabilities, capability of soil penetration at any angle, actuation, sensing, energy efficiency, control, and applicability. The research plan has two main objectives. First, we aim for a deeper understanding of the form, material properties, tropisms, kinematics, sensing, actuation, communication capabilities and control of the plant roots in shaping their behaviour. Second, we will develop new design principles and technologies for exploration and anchorage systems for terrestrial (and potentially non-terrestrial) surfaces, such as an autonomous robot that can move, steer, and grow in soil.

  • Oversee, operate and maintain all the Nanoscale Science and Technology Facilities for Biorobotics at CMBR.
  • Manage clean room day-to-day operations.
  • Recommend new tools and oversee their installation.
  • Negotiate technical specifications and price for new equipment purchase.
  • Qualify equipment and processes.
  • Develop and enforce operational protocols.
  • Train and interface with users.
  • Perform various technical task.
  • Provide a safe working environment with responsibility for safety and general operating procedures.

The ideal candidate should have:

  • A technical high School Diploma and at least ten years of experience as technician in Micro and/or Nano Technology research laboratories and clean room environment.
  • Knowledge and experience on equipment for smart materials and micro-biorobotic devices fabrication and characterization, such as scanning electron microscope, focused ion beam, dual beam workstation, atomic force microscope, direct write 3D laser nanolithography, profilometry, and optical microscopy.
  • Knowledge and experience on processes such as microlithography, etching, thin film deposition for micro biorobotic devices fabrication.
  • Knowledge and experience with safety regulations and requirements.
  • Understanding of and experience on good manufacturing practice with machine tool and workshop equipment.
  • Previous involvement and responsibility in activities aimed to support the start-up of new research laboratories and selection of scientific equipment in the field of Precision Mechanics and Micro/Nano technologies for Biorobotics applications.
  • Good communication skills and ability/willingness to integrate within a multidisciplinary international research group.
