Post Doc in Plant-inspired soft robotics and technologies at the Center for Micro-BioRobotics

BC: 69838

Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) with its headquarters in Genova, Italy, is a non-profit institution with the primary goal of creating and disseminating scientific knowledge and strengthening Italy's technological competitiveness. IIT promotes excellence in basic and applied research through a multidisciplinary scientific program that includes humanoid technologies and robotics, neuroscience and cognition, nanotechnology and materials. IIT has a staff of more than 1200 people and 10 subsidiary research centers throughout Italy.

The Center for Micro-BioRobotics (CMBR), an IIT Network Center based in Pontedera, Pisa, is opening a Postdoctoral position in the areas of design, modeling and fabrication of “Soft robots inspired by plants and animals”.

The major objective is to investigate robotics solutions merging soft materials with bioinspired approaches. The final aim is to achieve self-growing, smartly actuated robots with sensing capabilities taking inspiration from plants and animals that are used as a design guideline in terms of material, structure and function (a widely addressed topic at the Center).

Technologist position on Electronics and Sensor Technology for Biorobotics

CB:68951

The Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia – IIT (www.iit.it) is opening a Technologist position to manage the development and testing of bioinspired robots and smart material-based devices in the IIT Center for Micro-BioRobotics (CMBR@SSSA), located in Pontedera, very close to Pisa.

IIT, with headquarters in Genova, Italy, is a non-profit institution with the primary goal of creating and disseminating scientific knowledge and strengthening Italy's technological competitiveness.

IIT was established in 2003 and successfully created the large scale infrastructure in Genova, a network of 10 state of the art laboratories countrywide, recruited an international staff of about 1200 people from more than 50 countries. IIT's research endeavour focuses on high-tech and innovation, representing the forefront of technology with possible application from medicine to industry, computer science, robotics, life sciences and nanobiotechnologies.

The CMBR@SSSA, headed by director Barbara Mazzolai, is active in the field of bioinspired soft robotics and smart materials. Bioinspiration and soft properties increase the robot capabilities to move in unstructured environments and to safely interact with humans and with other living systems. The interdisciplinary character of the investigation requires the integration of skills and competences in different fields (e.g. robotics, biology, chemistry, engineering, material science, etc.). One major focus at the CMBR is therefore to investigate new enabling materials and technologies to be used as smart tools for developing robotic solutions. The related research includes soft actuation and sensing, organic electronics, and nanotechnology-based active materials.
